About Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of the oldest practiced medical treatments known to humankind. It originated in the Orient over 5,000 years ago. Its principles are based on the laws of nature and maintaining the body’s natural balance.

Acupuncture treatment assists nature by facilitating and harmonizing the flow of one’s life energy through the body. This energy, called “Qi” in Chinese medicine, circulates through the body in channels called meridians. If the Qi is flowing freely, the body is in balance and there are no symptoms. If the Qi is blocked in some way, there may be pain or other symptoms. Using a system of diagnosis and treatment planning that is thousands of years old, the acupuncturist formulates a treatment plan that is tailored to each unique patient. At certain areas on the body, the vital Qi energy comes close to the surface of the skin. These are the acupuncture “points.” Slender needles are then used by the acupuncturist to stimulate the Qi at these points and return the body to balance. When balance is reestablished, symptoms should ease and may disappear entirely.

The Use of Needles

We use sterile, single-use, disposable needles made of stainless steel, no thicker than a few strands of hair. These needles are inserted to a depth just below the skin surface, usually no more than about 1/8th of an inch. Individuals experience the effect of the needles in their own unique way.  Responses vary from a slight pinch to a feeling of numbness to an ache or tingling sensation. Some patients do not feel the needles at all, but may relax or notice that pain in another part of the body eases. People may even fall asleep with the needles in!

Moxabustion

Sometimes the application of heat therapy, called “moxabustion,” is beneficial to treatment. A small amount of an herb called “moxa” is placed on the acupuncture point and lit with an incense stick. As the moxa burns, it warms the point and builds the Qi in the meridian. After it produces a comfortable warmth, it is removed.

If you have unresolved health problems, want to optimize your wellness or just want a different approach to healing and health, then you should consider acupuncture. While relatively new to Americans, acupuncture has successfully treated billions of people over thousands of years. Acupuncture is currently the fastest growing form of health care in the U.S. If you are ready to get to the bottom of your health problems and approach your health in a new way, then it’s your turn to see what acupuncture treatment can do for you.

The Course of Treatment

How many treatments are necessary varies from person to person. Much depends on the length and severity of the problem. During your first visit, a traditional examination will be done. Reasons for seeking treatment will be explored and a complete medical and life history will be taken. From this examination an acupuncture diagnosis will be made and a treatment plan constructed. You can expect this session to last two hours. Based on the diagnosis, treatments will be scheduled, usually more frequent at first, then less often as time goes on, depending on the individual and his or her needs.
